Novel Visualization of Health News (2010–2015)

Goal:
To create a web-based tool to enable the public health workforce to rapidly scan published health-related news articles.

Summary:
HealthNews was a web-based tool created to enable the public health workforce to rapidly scan published health-related news articles. A web-based prototype was created – which successfully pulled news articles from Google’s News service and leveraged the Treemap algorithm for the visualization design. In 2013, Google disabled the feed and the prototype archived. The resource was not flash-based and thus, would be able to work on mobile devices. Visualization Specifics: The larger the rectangle and font size the more popular the article topic, and the brighter the background color, the more recent the news item. This prototype was inspired by: http://newsmap.jp.
